It’s now been more than 3 years that I’m in London but still, for some curious reasons, I’ve never found the time to go to a proper Reggae night. As a big fan of Roots Reggae Dub, having Jah Shaka playing at home with his own sound system was a great opportunity to fix this. We arrived at Tufnell Park, North London, at the Boston Arms’s Dome which became for the night “The Dub Club”. We were amongst the first, lights were still on and the sound had not even started which gave me some time to observe the set up a bit. Four massive walls of sound, about 2 meters high each, were surrounding the room. A couple of small stands were also inside selling some of Shaka’s merchandising as well as some vinyls, CDs, DVDs, posters, hats etc..
We managed to find a really nice spot on sofas on a stage above the dance-floor, waiting for the party to start and giving more time for Shaka to finish installing his decoration behind his turntable, 3 posters of Haile Selassie.
The sound finally started, giving us this big dose of bass we’ve all been waiting for. Great tunes, great atmosphere, everybody dancing, jumping, moving on the positive vibe. Transitions between each tune was very old school with no mix at all, neither any sound effects to cover the blank between 2 tunes, but hey, we were expecting a great selecta, not a DMC champion so no big surprise.
The only downside of this night was its cost, £18 was a bit expensive especially for an artist performing twice per month in London, but if you stay until the end (4am) then I’m sure it could worth it. Anyway, that was good times.
